40,000 square foot mural covering the entire facade of Mainframe Studios, a nonprofit creative studio building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa.
Working with the building’s Brutalism architectural style, I worked with the geometric block pile construction and likened it to my own art practice that stems from elemental materials and references ancient structures. I worked in tandem with Heartland Finishes to complete the four-month process, supplying them with templates and a color map of each of the five elevations.
Critical mass, by definition, addresses the size or amount required to maintain a movement or venture. The mural gives a visual representation, through fluctuating colored, totem-like columns, to the various creative disciplines at Mainframe Studios.
The organization integrated the design into various branding assets and collaborative marketing projects, including a beer label for Firecracker Brewery’s Modern Art Amber Ale.
